Gardens, Greenhouse & Gifts 2018

Depart: Tuesday, May 22, 2018 - 5:15 AM
Return: Wednesday, May 23, 2018 - 7:45 PM

Calling all gardeners to the eighth annual JH Travel “Gardens, Greenhouse & Gifts” tour!  Illinois – here we come! Just don’t forget those return address labels to mark each item purchased!

After departing from Newton we will have a quick rest stop along the way and later stop for a donut & coffee at Geneseo Donut, Geneseo, IL before checking out Pink Prairie Gardens located on a farm north of Geneseo. Our next stop is The Red Barn Nursery which is owned by two sisters for the past 27 years and is located by Sheffield, IL. Sheila & Jeff at Sunnyfield Greenhouse & Garden Center are excited for a return visit by JH Travel gardeners and are located by Kewanee, IL. They offer a wide variety of perennials as well as annuals with pottery & metal art available. They also volunteered to pickup our lunch at Subway to enjoy as we travel to Peoria, IL. Remember the “live fairies” that  greeted us the last time we traveled to Illinois? They welcomed us at Hoerr Nursery where we will have a short program followed by shopping time. They are very respected in the Peoria area and are known for very clean shopping areas, unusual plants and beautiful display areas. We then travel to the AmericInn Lodge & Suites (each person will be responsible for their own luggage handling) for a short rest and then to eat at Sugar which is located in an old carriage sales & repair warehouse. They will serve Artisan crafted wood fired pizza along with a salad followed by dessert. Back to the hotel to call it a night!

Rise & Shine! After our breakfast at the hotel we travel an hour before arriving in Bloomington, IL at Growing Grounds. This business was began in 1984 and offers a variety of items including perennials, trees across the street, unusual houseplants, shrubs, interior decorating along with a bird & pet department. Our next stop is close by at Owen Nursery & Florist. In business over 80 years they publish 11 catalogs and sell plants all over the United States, Guam & Puerto Rico. This is a new type stop for us where we learn how plants are readied for shipment, how plants are marketed and check to see if any of our gardeners are receiving one of their catalogs. Bill, from Owen Nursery & Florist will be presenting this program – so be sure to bring along some questions. Cracker Barrel is hosting our lunch today where each person will have a choice of meat, two sides, bread, drink and cobbler for dessert. One more stop in Bloomington which will be at Wendell Niepagen Greenhouses & Garden Center. They have 13 greenhouses and offer the largest selection of annuals around the Bloomington area and offer unusual plants that aren’t found in other greenhouses. They will be offering a discount on purchased items to help everyone’s shopping habits along!  We then board the coach traveling onto Seatonville, IL to visit Seatonville Greenhouse which houses 4,000 perennials, 20,000 annuals in 6″ pots and a large assortment of geraniums.

We will then be making our journey back to Newton with great memories of our “Gardens, Greenhouse & Gifts” trip for 2018!  On  the way back home a decision will be made as to where our trip goes in 2019 – so be thinking.
