Calling all gardeners to the fourth annual JH Travel garden tour!

An early morning departure traveling east finds our first stop at Wallace’s Garden Center in Bettendorf, IA for a tour of the greenhouse followed by a program on “Container Gardening” while enjoying our morning snack before free time. Traveling onto Coal Valley, Illinois we visit Corn Crib Nursery corn_crib_animationfor a “Broken Pot” program. Meantime, lunch is delivered to the coach to enjoy on our way to Sunnyfield Greenhouse in Galva, IL for a program on “Heuchera’s Galore” which they grow over 800 varieties of perennials along with annuals and other plants. Luthy Botanical Garden is next on our itinerary located in Peoria, IL for a tour and this year’s hands-on-project of making a terrarium with a horticulturist from Luthy. Evening meal will be prior to our project at Cracked Pepper Bakery. Our evening accommodations will be at Sleep Inn & Suites in Washington, IL.

Rise and shine! We have a full day of greenhouses, nurseries, garden art and gift shops to check out! After our breakfast at the hotel we visit a family owned business which is Washington Greenhouse for a program on “Native Perennial Grasses”. Next on our itinerary is a visit to a third generation business which is Hoerr Nursery & Garden Center for a program and free time. In Dunlap, IL we find a business that started with one barn and quickly expanded to Green View Landscaping for a program on “Vertical Gardening”. Lunch today will be at Chillicothe, IL at Happy Thought Coffee followed by a program on “Our Unique Plants” at Picket Fence Floral, Gift & Garden Center. Next we are hoping to visit Green Acres Herb Farm in Low Point, IL (not confirmed) followed by pizza at the Pizza Celler in Princeton, IL. Our overnight accommodations will be at AmericInn in Princeton.

Hornbaker Gardens Greenhouse

On our third day we will visit Hornbaker Gardens which carry over 500 varieties of hostas and the program will be on “New Hostas for 2014”. We will have some additional time here due to the size of the business. We then travel to Dixon, IL to Anne’s Garden Center where the program will be on “Ornamental Trees”. We will have a picnic under an open pavilion while learning about “Unique Container Plantings” at Distinctive Gardens. The
business is located on 7 ½ acres and they have several display gardens which you can tour. Our last stop will be in Marion, IA at Culver’s Garden Center & Greenhouse. A fast food stop along our journey back to Newton with great memories of our “Gardens, Greenhouses & Gifts trip for 2014! On the way home a decision will be made as to where our trip goes in 2015!

Tour includes: motor coach transportation, driver tip, overnight accommodations for two nights, 7 meals (morning snack, 2 deluxe continental breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 evening meals), a truck & trailer to keep your purchases cool (not responsible for loss of plants or breakage of items), all taxes & gratuities on the above mentioned attractions on the trip.
