This is our fourth in the series of “2012” Iowa travels for JH Travel!  We are headed northeastern for this trip visiting Cedar Rapids, Iowa area for this discovery of Iowa’s hidden treasures! Come along to learn how this town survived the awful Flood of 2008 and as we are touring and eating in places that have recovered to see the challenges they have overcome!

Our first stop on our itinerary is for a tour of Theatre Cedar Rapids which is the region’s largest & longest operating community theatre with 900 volunteers and 11 full-time staff that contract artists to create a lineup of wonderful productions and educate more than 50,000 eastern Iowans of all ages! Lunch in the atrium followed by a tour is our next stop at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center.  This is Iowa’s newest boutique hotel that offers everything!  With an extensive art collection and inside is a teaching facility which prepares the finest professionals to lead in the global hospitality field.  Students serve in many roles in the hotel which we will view on our tour.  We are in for a real treat as we visit the Rockwell Collins Museum.  Our group will learn about products that made this company successful in the early 1930’s.  The very first antenna that heard GPS in 1977 along with the Morse Code telegraph key that sent the first message through space just to name a couple of interesting facts that we will see or hear! At the National Czech & Slovak Museum we will learn about its very slow move across the street with the help of hydraulics and major I-beams in 2011 with the new date of opening the museum on July 14, 2012.  The Rising Above Exhibit is where the group will learn about what the museum did to save the artifacts and how the flooding affected the many businesses in the area.  A Czech meal at Al’s Blue Toad completes our day with homemade dumplings, kraut & red cabbage and of course . . . strudel for dessert! A surprise gift for each person will be given on the way back to Newton which is a favorite of the Czech people.  Hum. . . I wonder what it might be?
